METRO Houston METRORail Transit Line Section 1 Maintenance & Repair Building

Client: Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO)

Partnered with Jacobs Civil, Shrader Engineering contributed electrical and mechanical design services to a multipurpose building that provides total maintenance, repair and cleaning for METRORail cars related to the Houston Light Rail.

Major scope of work items included: mechanical design for radiant heating systems within maintenance areas, exhaust systems for the welding and machine shop, and outside makeup air units for fresh air supply into the maintenance pit areas. 

Shrader designed an HVAC system for the two-story office space which incorporated multiple RTU’s and VAV mixing boxes to compensate for the differential building skin loads. The electrical power distribution was based on 480-volt switchgear, sub-feeding the traction power substation, railcar wash motor control center, and load centers for all general power and lighting needs. Maintenance area lighting systems included low bay HID and industrial grade fluorescent fixtures.

The traditional office space area included: general power and lighting, bi-level light switching, a lightning protection and grounding system, data and communication, public address and paging systems, and a fire detection system.

Plumbing design included: cold and hot water supply system, sanitary and waste discharge system, roof drainage system, compressed air system and natural gas piping.
