PHA FIBER OPTIC INSTALLATION

23 Jan, 2012

Port of Houston Authority Woodhouse Fiber Optic Installation project is under construction. Shrader Engineering provided communication distribution and network design as a subconsultant to S&B Infrastructure for installation of a fiber optic backbone cable as part of a Federal Homeland Security Grant to improve the security for the Port of Houston. The objective of the fiber optic system is to provide a robust and scalable network to transport critical security data.

Shrader Engineering’s scope includes development of a comprehensive Preliminary Engineering Report to outline functional relationships between the Port’s Security Network and associated existing network node locations, and to develop a system topology to unify the new and existing security network and to optimize each system’s capabilities and increase the overall reliability.

Shrader’s major scope of work items in the Design Phase include:

  • Development of physical and logical fiber network diagrams
  • Conduit routing plans and installation methods for ‘last-mile’ conduit routing
  • Specification of fiber optic cable and associated consumables
  • Design and specify necessary hardware and physical layer changes and interconnections required to interconnect and energize the fiber-optic backbone
  • Selection and sizing the optics hardware to accommodate the fiber optic backbone system’s optical loss budget, bandwidth requirements, and latency sensitivities

As part of the construction phase, Shrader Engineering will perform commissioning of the network.
